I started off my process for this brief with research into Martin Parr. I was introduced to Martin Parr in a lecture, with one of his photos from his book ‘Sign of Our Times’. He is a British documentary photographer known for pushing the boundaries. Many of his projects tell a story of a place he has visited, such as when he went to Cuba. He uses a set of images from this place, accompanied with some writing to create a narrative.
Martin Parr’s ‘Cuba on the line’ project can be found with this link:
Martin Parr’s work lead me to realise I want to take a literal approach to this brief and produce a chronological narrative of images that represent where I call home. I want to create a photographic essay that has a beginning, middle and end. The first and last images will be of the outside of my house, showing the physicality of where I live and the images in the middle will be of elements inside that make me feel at home.
This lead me to research photographers who produce photographic essays and I came across Jan Sochor who was born in the Czech Republic and produces many photographic essays with Latin America as inspiration, that appear in international magazines, such as ‘The Guardian’. Jan Sochor often tells the story of a complex society in Latin America and the struggles they go through. He adds a brief caption to each of his photo, something I am going to do.
I took many photos using my Dad’s Nikon D90 while I was at home one weekend. I photographed things that are quintessentially home to me, such as my cat, family sitting round the table, flowers and the view from my bedroom window. A variety of these images can be seen in the contact sheet below.
